Hearing Aids and Dentures for cancer survivor

Organized by Linda Mckelvey Benefit

March Update ( Start of March 3.2011)
Just a quick update.

Health wise, I just saw the Neurosurgeon last week and she gave me good news so far. She told me that she didn't see a brain tumor or cancer in my brain. She wants me to get another MRI in early April just to make sure.

I started my head and neck therapy which is to help temporarily with my headaches and pains. The therapist told me that it would not work out the pinched nerves in my head and neck. I was confused, I thought that was why I was going. It felt good when I went on Feb 28th, 2011, but my headaches returned the next day and my neck was tender.

I can't complain, my cancer is still gone and I am remaining postitive no matter what. I did receive my dentures and love them, I am having trouble eating with them and I have a bone spur or root in the gum that is rubbing. I need to go back to Dayton to see if the dentist can help with that.

Now on to my hearing. I have had a hard time lately. My Pug, Pugi was going crazy one day and acted like someone had hurt him, it was my smoke alarm going off and I couldn't hear it. It took me over 2 hours to figure out what was wrong with him, the poor little guy was suffering from the loud noise that I couldn't hear at all. I am praying that I can get help soon to get at least one hearing aid for now, so I can be function able.

Any help I can get will be my lifeline to independence again, so I am able to hear and be aware of my surroundings. Every penny turns into a dollar, and is so appreciated!
May your generosity pay off 100 times over!!

I am so grateful to those of you who have already given. Your donation has gotten me my dentures so far, and will get me closer to my goal!! Thanks so much!! I will remain positive and let you know more updates as I get them!!

February Update (Early in the month update)
Hi Everyone!

Well I know it is early in the month, but a lot has happened. I have had 4 MRI's already. All in one week. They were on my Head, Neck, Brain, and an extra one on the Brain to look for something that the Neurologist needed to check over. I saw him on the Feb 4th for the results. He told me that he was checking the Mastoid bone for infection, however it turned out that he was looking for a brain tumor! Enough is enough already! He told me that he didn't see one, but that doesn't mean it isn't there. He said that I do need to start neck therapy now, and he wants me to get blood work to check for infection. He told me that I now need to go see a Neurosurgeon, he does see something on the MRI that looks like infection or ???? on or near my brain.... I am nervous about this!! He said that in the future I may need a spinal tap, or possible head surgery. I just want to get better, that is all. I do know that I have Extreme inflammation in the mastoid, and I will have to follow up with my ENT on that.

As for my dentures, I have them!!! I do have to get some adjustment, they are rubbing wrong, but I am so happy about that.

I will update on the Neurosurgeon and my neck therapy and possible injections into the back of my head and neck to relieve the pain of the pinched nerves in my head. Good news, the pinched nerves are outside the skull!

New updates soon! Any donations are so deeply appreciated! Thank you for reading my story!
January Update!
Happy New Year to all!!
My new updates. I wish I had good news. On December 15th, 2010, I had my 30th surgery since all of this started in early 2005. It went well, just replaced the tubes in my ears and removed some of the liquid and infection.
I started a few weeks after that surgery getting extreme head pains, I called Migraines. I was getting dizzy, sleeping too much, and just drained out. I figured that it was just the existing infection in the mastoid area that was starting to spread. I asked my ENT to refer me to a Neurologist to see if he can tell me why I was experiencing extreme head pains and now neck spasms on the left side. I saw the Neurologist today (1/17/11). He had an idea right away what was wrong. He told me that I have several pinched nerves in my skull! In the bone. Also, I have them in the left side of the neck, and that is part of the reason that I have the neck spasms. I am going to have an MRI with contrast done within a week or so. The problem with that is, I will be in the MRI for an hour and a half, but with the dry mouth, I need water and can only be without water for around 5 minutes, they may have to sedate me. After the MRI, I will be scheduled for Neck Therapy to see if they can work on the nerves that are exposed. The nerves that are being pinched by the bone in the skull will need neck injections to either calm the nerve endings or may have to deaden them! I am not looking forward to all of this. I was put on medication to try to rid some of the pain.

Update on the dentures. I am still waiting but I am hopeful I will have them in one week, very excited for that! I am still hoping that this fundraiser will eventually help me obtain my hearing aids that I truly need as soon as possible. If anyone can help just a little, that would mean the world to me, I am keeping Positive thoughts and with the thought of getting hearing aids and being able to hear what people say to me, that is enough to keep me positive and look forward to the future!! Wish me luck on my newest journey, and I pray that it works and I can be pain free, and make 2011 a great year!!
December Update!
Well it is December already. My contributions have stopped, I am so appreciative of the 18 people that have helped out, without them, I wouldn't have been able to make my weekly trips to Dayton to work on getting my dentures. That fell through, but I am still working with this amazing dentist, I just had to get another Lab guy to do my dentures. He did my new impressions on December 6th. Will update you on the status of the dentures.

My hearing is getting worse, as you know, I had my second Mastoid surgery on the Left ear Sept 1, 2010. It didn't work, I started getting extreme migraines again a few weeks ago. I asked my ENT to order a CT Scan, the scan did show excessive inflammation in my head, he said that I had a large amount of blood just sitting in the back of my head. He worries me when he says that there is nothing more he can do to help me, a few months ago, he said that it was ongoing surgeries or my life. That is scary. I need to get some help to fund my travel plans hopefully soon to California to see a specialist to save my life if possible. I need to find out what can be done to help me, I fought too hard to lose now. I am cancer free, and if I can beat cancer, I should be able to overcome anything. I am a fighter, I have a daughter, I need to be here for her.

I am asking anyone that can help even a little bit, it all adds up. I plan on volunteering my time to the cancer patients anyway I can once I am able to work again. I just want to live. I need hearing aids, and I hate to ask for help, but I really do need it. I realize it is the holiday season, but even $10 will add up, $5, anything. Thank you for reading my story and I will keep you updated on my health status. Happy Holidays to everyone!!
November Update!
Hi Everyone! Well, My great friends and I started my Chip In on October 16th, 2010, and I have had 15 generous people contribute to my Fundraiser, and I have raised $400 towards my goal.

I still go to Dayton weekly, usually twice a week to see what the status on my dentures are and I pray that I will be able to pick them up this coming up Tuesday, November 16th! I could not have made all of these trips without the help from the people that have helped me out so far, my old Trooper gets only 13 MPG, so it takes $22 round trip to Dayton, but worth every penny!

I still have a long way to go to reach my goal, but again I thank everyone financially and emotionally. I am in desperate need of hearing aids. I was driving the other day, and a paramedic was coming up behind me, around 11 cars back, and I could not hear the siren. This is extremely dangerous, and the second time this has happened. I thank God everyday for my Pug, Pugi. If it wasn't for him, I would never know if someone has knocked on my door. He alerts me by barking, but if I am sleeping on my right side, I do not hear him, but I feel him jumping around on my bed to wake me. He is amazing. I have met so many wonderful people and again I thank you all for your help and support!

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving holiday!! More updates soon!!
Hi. My name is Linda Mckelvey. I am a cancer survivor of Nasopharyngeal Cancer.
When diagnosed, I was told that I was Stage 5, and had 8 weeks to live. This is an extremely rare cancer. I am proud to say that I have reached my 5 years in remission. Getting here has been a true battle. After enduring the traumatic 9 months of 7 different chemotherapy medications and long treatments, and 7 weeks of extended radiation with daily shots in my stomach to help preserve my saliva glands (which in the end didn't help), it was a painful process. I spent 5 months in and out of the hospital. It became my 2nd home.

On August 1, 2005, I was told after several scans that I had beat this horrible disease, now it was time to relax, rest and look forward to my life returning to normal but with my treatments as severe as they were, it would take around 2 years for my bone marrow to return and my body to return to its normal state.

Unfortunately, I was unaware that a new road of recovery was required for me to continue to get better, I started to have ear surgeries on my left ear, then right, and my doctor seemed to try antibiotics and the infection wouldn't clear. Then in Feb '08, my left Vocal cord went Paralyzed. I saw a specialist and it will never get better, I pray my right one never goes paralyzed or I will not be able to speak. My hearing has been getting worse, and I have had my 29th surgery as of Sept 1, 2010. I have lost my hearing for the most part in my left ear approximatively 85%, and in my right ear 65% from all the surgeries. I had to have all of my teeth extracted a few months ago from radiation damage.
I am on Medicare and they will not pay for dentures. It is so imperative that I get dentures immediately before my gum tissue is damaged or deteriorates, I am at a high risk of developing osteoradionecrosis, a severe condition of damage to the jaw due to radiation therapy. My nutritional status is at risk from my inability to chew foods. I even went through 45 HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatments to try to preserve my gums, it just didn't help me.

I have exhausted ALL of my resources. I sent an email to Oprah, The Dr's Show, and Dr.Phil McGraw, and never heard bACK from any of them. I have made so many phone calls and it seems that there is absolutely no help for someone of my age (38) and on disability. All I want is to be able to live a normal, healthy, life and I need dentures and soon hearing aids to function normally.

I would appreciate any help offered to me. If you would like to contribute a donation, please follow the link below to my ChipIn account. Thank you for taking your time to read my story.
